BEAUTY.

It was better than her last home, if she could call it that. It was warmer, even at night when she had the lights outside to keep her company. Flashing lights...
The only thing she wished she could complain about was the noise, especially at night...the midnight hooting of cars she had to contend with, sigh. They seemed to have a bout of the crazies as her mother used to say. The darkness always brought out the ‘true’ nature of people.
It didn’t help matters much once the hustle and bustle of city life kicked in early in the morning. The rudest of ‘awakenings’? A silent whisper at first and then bam, everyone seemed to be awake at the same time. She still couldn’t understand the chemistry of it all. How it all fit together.
But...
She loved how they strolled past the windows admiring her beauty. It was...wonderful. It made her feel appreciated, even if it was for just the brief 5 seconds of fame. The “oohs!” and “aahs!” made this ok. Being lain out there for all to see, not much unlike dirty linen…
That, however, was different from staring. Like what her neighbour, the hamster was doing. He kept giving her these nasty looks as if she’d stolen his wheel. After all he did it when he was not training.
Her neighbours...three and four, from each side. First, her favourite, the hamster, there was something seemingly off when he wasn’t running to the delight of the masters...then the parrot, she enjoyed the nonsensical monologues between him and himself.
Then, the...peacock, admired by all... She paled when compared to him, all majestic, strutting, for all to see. He exuded that air of confidence so sure of himself. He got the attention that he did not seek, the admiration he did not crave. Yep, he had it all, no doubt.
But she, a humble snake...despised, resented, the outcast, lazy, the quiet one, the ugly one.
She wanted, needed to be set free, free of these four.
